Premier BREAKTHROUGHS Conference and Innovation Celebration

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Dynamic RFID was selected as a 2010 Innovator by the Premier healthcare alliance and was highlighted at this year’s BREAKTHROUGHS conference in Washington, DC. The honorees were chosen due to their commitment to improving healthcare quality through innovation. Twenty-three healthcare related innovations were selected to take part in the Innovation Celebration, all with the same goal: improve care, reduce costs and minimize risks. More than 3,000 healthcare providers, experts and researchers were present at this year’s conference.

The event not only showcased new products, but also highlighted manufacturers that have taken existing technologies and made them more accommodating. The innovations displayed showed a strong focus on continuing procedural advancements in the industry.

Dynamic’s hand-hygiene solution proved to be a great fit for the deficiencies that many Infection Control specialists have been pained with over the past several years. The technology behind the solution showed a fit for all departments within healthcare facilities creating a great “buzz” for Dynamic RFID.

Hot Topics at HIMSS10

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

As HIMSS10 came to a close today there was a lot of buzz involving new technologies that can achieve measurable value and help improve care, reduce costs and minimize risks in the industry. Hospitals and other healthcare organizations are in major need of achieving “real” ROI from the software and hardware tools that they will be implementing in an effort to reach their 2015 goal for compliance. It is important for organizations to look at implementing the right technologies that can help them sustain ROI over time.

Patient tracking seemed to be a major buzz at HIMSS10. Patient tracking is a more unique solution than asset tracking in that it involves moving assets. (Patients) A patient tracking solution consists of granularity and a much faster refresh rate than an asset tracking solution. If a quick refresh rate and a high level of granularity are absent then the patients will be out of sight before the appropriate staff is notified. Dynamic Computer Corporation offers a variety of solutions using RFID (Radio frequency identification) and RTLS (real-time location systems) technologies that can automatically update location and status information of patients in as little as 3-second intervals. Healthcare organizations have options when implementing RTLS and RFID systems into their infrastructure. There are both wired and Wi-Fi technologies available to implement a successful patient tracking solution. Wi-Fi solutions use Wi-Fi-enabled tags that interact and communicate with access points within a building to define their location over an existing 802.11 wireless infrastructure. Wired solutions use IR (infrared) and RFID technologies that communicate to determine the ultimate location of a patient in real-time. Much like a wireless access point, wired solutions can either use IR and/or RF antennas to communicate with a tag in real time as a patient moves about the facility.

Another topic buzzing around HIMSS10 was how to get smaller hospitals and healthcare organizations on board with implementing EHRs. Data standardization is extremely important and will need to be clearly defined and seamless in order for the industry as a whole to achieve meaningful use objectives. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, as we all know, includes $19 billion in grants and loans available to healthcare organizations in an effort to aid in implementing an infrastructure and processes to improve care, reduce costs and minimize risks. Along with funding comes choosing the right solution for each individual organizations needs. Smaller clinics with less staff will have a problem keeping up with manual data entry processes. RFID and RTLS solutions can eliminate the need for manual entry and let the staff focus on providing quality patient care and sustaining financial stability and compliance with standardization.

With emerging technologies come advantages and disadvantages. It is important to determine what individual requirements fit your organizations needs when evaluating each solution. Dynamic has the ability to customize a solution that will not only take into consideration your current pains but will also help you plan for your future needs.

Henry Tenarvitz of Versus Technology speaks about RTLS at “Meaningful Use Beyond EMRs” Event

Henry Tenarvitz, addressing the GDAHC audience

Henry Tenarvitz, addressing the GDAHC audience

Henry Tenarvitz, Chief Intellectual Property Officer of Versus Technology, was one of the three speakers at the Greater Detroit Area Health Council Coffee & Controversy session yesterday. The topic was “Meaningful use beyond EMRs: Health IT trends to improve quality and patient safety.”

Ternarvitz spoke about hospitals using RTLS solutions for improving quality, safety, and efficiency. He explained that the data provided by real-time locating technology results in significant cost savings and improvements in patient care.

Tenarvitz demonstrated how with Versus’ system, hospitals use infrared-radio frequency (IR-RF)-enabled staff, patient & equipment tags to know exactly where people and assets are located with 99.9% accuracy. The system then marries this real-time data with a set of business rules to automatically update electronic systems with key information.

Below, two screenshots Tenarvitz showed the audience demonstrate how the information can be viewed by staff (these are only two of the several key views). The first shows an electronic greaseboard with the most current patient status information.

The second shows a color-coded floorplan view, which shows staff the status of rooms and facilities at a glance. Both of these views are automatically updated using passively collected data from the IR-RF tags.

The following is a list of outcomes Tenarvitz reported from Versus’ case studies.

  • Increased the number of patient care rooms by 150% without adding staff.
  • Decreased ED wait times by over 60 minutes or more.
  • Automated room turnover based on patient discharge and “room clean” status.
  • Decreased room cleaning times to 24.6 minutes.
  • Increased bed capacity by 25% with enhanced patient flow.
  • Eliminated clinic waiting rooms, automated staff communication.
  • Reduced phone calls by 75% creating quieter healing environments.
  • Decreased equipment search time from 2 hrs. to <5 min.
  • Decreased annual property loss from $1.5M to $40K.
  • Alleviated equipment hoarding and nurse frustrations regarding equipment availability.
  • Reduced the number of miles nurses log during their shifts by a ½ mile.
  • Identified staff requiring prophylaxis after short, forgotten interactions with infectious patients.
  • Increase hand washing tracking/compliance
  • Increased Efficiency/Communication/Safety
  • Automated 3rd Party Systems (E-greaseboards, reporting, Pyxis Medication Units)

The two case studies that were discussed in detail were St. Joseph Hospital (PeaceHealth) in Bellingham, WA. and the St. Louis VA Medical Center in St. Louis MO.

“Meaningful Use Beyond EMRs” audience learned about HIT legislation, RTLS and My1HIE to improve quality and patient safety

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

The GDAHC Coffee & Controversy Event was held this morning at the Skyline Club in Southfield, Mich. Our RFID team joined participants from various stakeholder industries to discuss “Meaningful use beyond EMRs: Health IT trends to improve quality and patient safety.”

Helen Hill updates the crowd on healthcare reform legislation

Helen Hill updates the crowd on healthcare reform legislation

Helen Hill, Director IT Consulting & HIE, Henry Ford Health System, updated the audience on the current HIT regulatory landscape. Hill discussed the overlap and disconnects between the various versions of health reform bills on the table, and provided insight into how the integration of the disparate aspects of the bills might occur.

Henry Tenarvitz of Versus Technology talked about how hospitals are using RTLS for process improvement. He explained the technology and then discussed two case studies where Versus’ RTLS solution has significantly improved patient flow, asset utilization and cost savings.

Dr. Steven Grant and Terrisca Des Jardins talked about My1HIE and walked the audience through the MyWorkspace portal for physicians. Grant, President & CEO of My1HIE, views the MyWorkspace portal as an alternative — or compliment — to physician EMR systems. The health information exchange provides a single point of connection between physicians, hospitals, health plans and vendors with access applications including: secure email, e-Prescribing, Patient Registries, e-Labs and a document manager, and other connected entities.

More details on the speaker presentations will be posted here tomorrow. Stay tuned, and feel free to post any questions.

DCC Answers Obama’s Call with Health Care IT Forum

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

Farmington Hills, Mich. – Dec. 22, 2008 Dynamic Computer Corp. (DCC) is holding a health care IT forum on Dec. 30 in response to President-Elect Obama’s call for recommendations.

Obama re-emphasized the importance of health care IT in his most recent statement, and is backing up this sentiment with a pledge for even more funding to get health care providers wired.

The stakes are particularly high for Michigan, as the health care industry is rapidly expanding in the state. Health care is the single largest employer in many of Michigan’s communities. Growth is accelerating in the industry while many other sectors that have historically sustained Michigan are now struggling to thrive.

Hospital administrators, health IT professionals and community members are invited to discuss their thoughts on what needs should be addressed by the new administrations policy on health care.

The results of the discussion will be submitted to Senator Daschle and posted to Change.gov. Dec. 31. Copies of the report will also be available for download on DCC’s RFID for health care Web site at www.DynamicRFIDSolutions.com.
